  FAQs

How often should my clock be serviced?
Timemasters, as well as many manufacturers, recommend preventative service and oiling of all moving parts of fine timepieces every 2 years, and thorough cleaning every five to ten years, depending on climate. Extreme temperatures, humidity or dry conditions may require more frequent services. It's a small investment that will extend the life of your heirloom clock for generations to come.

What is the difference between cleaning and servicing a clock?
Cleaning is a preventative measure we recommend to keep your timepiece in top condition. Servicing is a restorative measure that may include replacing worn parts, as well as oiling the moving parts.

Can I wind my clock too tight?
Yes. Wind the keys only until you meet resistance. Never force the key to turn as you may damage the internal mechanisms.

How do I regulate the speed of my clock?
This action will vary by the type of clock and the manufacturer. Consult your owner's manual.

I'm moving. Can I move my grandfather clock myself?
Extreme care should be taken when moving a Grandfather Clock, which is why Timemasters recommends that you hire professionals whenever possible. If professional moving is not an option, we recommend that all accessory parts such as the pendulum and weights are removed and packed carefully to prevent damage. NEVER wind a cable drive movement clock without weights installed.
